Being "Natural"

"OMG! Is that your real hair?" "Your skin is always glowing, what do you use?" "You have 3 sons? How are you so thin and fit?"

It's the same answer to all 3 questions. I'm Natural! lol

I started this journey towards being natural in July of 2009. After being sick for almost 2 years I thought it was time to make a change in my lifestyle and that change began with the health of my body. For me, being natural is not just about natural hair, it is an entire lifestyle that a person chooses to live. Due to how I was raised as an Island Girl, it was not difficult to begin living a natural lifestyle. My Granny Gwen (RIP), my Granny Rachel, and my mother all instilled so much knowledge ranging from healthy cooking to which herbs and plants do what for the overall health of the body. My mother who has a background in health and medicine was always very picky about what we digest, as well as use for our bodies, and she never allowed me to wear weaves, makeup, or even wear shave. My mother was an advocate to natural beauty and healthcare. She ALWAYS had a medical statistic ready for us anytime we wanted to do anything with or to our bodies (annoying to say the least, but somehow I appreciate it now lol). This same lady relaxed my hair at the age of 7 because she couldn't manage these tresses on my head. She always described my hair as wild and out of control. With my hair being processed for so long I had no idea what my texture was, but I knew if I wanted to start this journey to a healthy lifestyle I would have to do something about this chemically relaxed hair.

In the summer of 2009 I was 5'11" and weighed a whopping 260lbs. My health was deteriorating quickly. I had always been a thick girl from very young. In 6th grade I was 160lbs with C-cups, by the time I left middle school I was 180lbs with DD-cups. When I graduated from high school I was 210lbs with DDD-cups. After high school I fluctuated from 190-220lbs. Before giving birth to my last child in 2007 I was 210lbs and after birth I was 190lbs. Gradually the weight increased and by 2009 I topped out at 260lbs.

So I started my journey to a "Naturally Healthy" lifestyle. I changed what and how I ate. I changed my fitness patterns. For my hair I began to transition from relaxed to natural. During this time I also did a lot of research and developed my own hair and skin care system and regimen. I also began incorporating vitamin & mineral sources into my diet. In October 2009, I finally did my Big Chop (BC).
Started Transitioning (approx 3 inches new growth)
Semi BC (Half New Growth/Half Relaxer)
BIG CHOP October 31, 2009
With healthy eating, proper vitamin & minerals supplements, and sticking to my hair & Skin Care system and regimen I got astounding results for my body internally and externally in a very short space of time. By June of 2010 I lost a lot of weight, my hair grew amazingly fast and my skin began to glow radiantly. Not to mention I felt much better physically and mentally. Today I stand 5'11" and 155lbs. I am also much healthier than before. I practice Yoga daily and run at least 5 miles Monday-Friday, in addition to working out at least 3 times a week. I have never felt younger and better.
